What We Need Most As the Nation Re-Opens

May 21, 2020

Months into the pandemic, our rollercoaster continues, changing direction yet again. As the nation takes a turn and opens up, with the coronavirus still alive and well, whether we are past-ready or not-at-all ready, we need to remember one truth. However this surreal event has touched us, angered us, scared us, or altered our life, one truth looms large. We need a Savior.

We need His strength to carry on and His guidance to move forward. We search for His wisdom to make decisions not based on waffling feelings or social pressures, but based on truth linked with faith. We desire His peace to calm us and His sovereignty to reign.

As we step out of stay-at-home orders and quarantines, we remember God has not changed one whit. No virus has weakened His being. No fears drag His steps. No politics have altered His plan or will. He knows with precision everything about this virus. He knew exactly the impact on our world, our nation and our lives. As man fumbled with predictions and models and plans, He comprehended all the numbers, effects and results.

God knew the ways this pandemic would be hard for His children. He understood we would struggle. He anticipated our fear. Anger. Frustration. Confusion. He knew we would need a Savior; recognized we would need Him.

And He is here. Present and available. Amid the chaos, uncertainty and pain. Not “somewhere out there”: distant, passive, uncaring. But here: faithful, trustworthy, involved, moving.

Truth: we need saved every day. Whether spring blooms warm sunshine and blossoms of popping color, or blooms raging storms and popping pandemic chaos, we need a Savior.

We hunger for salvation from our spiraling thoughts and redemption from our secret addictions. We crave rescue from closet depression. We pine for passion poured into humdrum, groundhog days, and need pulled out of head-spinning, chaotic days.

We need salvation on the days we choose despair over hope. The times we cower with fear and the moments we choose self over others. The stick-our-head-in-the-sand days and the hours we are paralyzed with indecision.

Every day requires a Savior.

We feign, “I’ve got this”, shaking our fists into the unknown, with veneer strength and shallow resolve. Or puffed up with pride we spout all the answers, ignoring our limited understanding and vision. We ride the merry-go-round of life choosing the horse or the lion or bear, pretending to have control over what happens around us. Yet, scared spitless the ride will stop and we will be staring into the realities of life, death and eternity. In all scenarios, we need a Savior.

Today this is our confession. Our deepest need. Our hunger. “Jesus, I need you!” Our great comfort. Our source of strength. Our salvation.

And Jesus wants you to know that He sees you. He loves you. He wants you to experience His goodness in all of the hards. To absorb the peace His Presence provides. And to rest in His perfect, sufficient grace for each day of your life. God wants the glowing warmth of His love to radiate all around you, melting away the chill of uncertainty and darkness. He wants the hope of His salvation to be a gleaming treasure in your grasp.

Yes, all this is available to us by calling on one name: Jesus. Bow your head and whisper it. Raise your voice and shout it. Lift your hands and open your heart to receive Him. Play this powerful worship song and let the words flow over you as you pour your heart out of your need for your Savior. Every day. Every hour.
